1. Attractiveness
It’s a no-brainer that if an attraction site is clean, free of litter and is well-maintained, people will want to visit it and enjoy it. Maintaining an attraction could involve simple tasks, such as clearing a pathway from overgrown shrubbery, to making sure windows are clean and public bins are emptied on a regular basis. A well-looked after attraction will appeal to travellers, bringing a steady flow of income and even opportunities for development.

2. Access
There’s no use in having a beautiful attraction if no one can get to it. Road signs in nearby towns directing travellers are always a good idea, as well as having good roads into the attraction site that well-looked after. Local and provincial government should be able to realise the income potential of an attraction, ensuring ease of access for interested travellers.

5. Provide quality information
Make sure that the attraction is interpreted to visitors. This could mean a well-trained guide take them around the site, or that you have signboards with information. An attraction is only really appreciated if it is understood, so make sure that you have lots of information available.

Providing visitors with detailed information is essential. Many people have concerns or can become anxious around what will be provided, what is available, or where they need to go when they are away from home. While one attraction may not need to give as much information as others, answering the most frequently asked questions (FAQ) is a must for all business owners and can be done by means of a brochure, pamphlet or even visitor information signage around the attraction.

Be clear about when guided tours take place or what the operating hours are. Make sure that you stick to this as visitors often plan their days in advance and are left disappointed and angry if they arrive to find a closed gate.

6. Awareness
The final element of sustaining a good tourist attraction is making sure that all relevant information about the attraction is up to date and easily available for interested travellers to find. Having brochures, posters, information at local tourism offices and signage are all great ways of helping to spread awareness about the attraction. Partnering with local and national tourism bodies can be very helpful in marketing your attraction as well. Make sure you have a strong presence online by listing your attraction on websites and make sure your attraction has a page/account on at least one social media platform, such as Facebook, where you can post updates, news, photos and visitor testimonials.

This Guide helps you through the short process of signing up to the Open Africa Route Toolkit. The Toolkit is an online resource filled with useful information that will help you and the other members of your route to achieve good results with the growth and success of your route.

The sign-up process is simple, so you should have access to the Toolkit within minutes of signing up.

Who may sign up for the Route Toolkit?

The Open Africa Route Toolkit is available for free to all active members of Open Africa routes. You will need to meet the obligations specified of your route to qualify, and if your membership lapses, you will no longer have access to the Toolkit.

Typically, it will be new route members who sign up, which makes it easy to include the sign-up process as part of the induction of new route members.

What computer or mobile device do I need?

You can sign up to and use the Open Africa Route Toolkit with any computer, tablet or mobile phone with internet access. All the currently available browsers will work well, and you should be able to get along with even the slowest of internet connections.

Please note that you will need an active internet connection for using the Toolkit. However, the Toolkit will not use much data, since the site is built to be quick and easy to use on your mobile device.

Signing up and using the Toolkit from a computer may be your preferred option, since it will allow for printing of pages, but the content also displays perfectly on a mobile phone, as long as it has internet browser capabilities.

How to sign up for the Route Toolkit

Follow these steps below:

1. Look for the Invitation Code sent to you as part of your membership information. If you do not have an Invitation Code, ask your Route Forum member responsible for membership to provide you with the code. The code lapses frequently, so if you took a long time to sign up, it may be that the code is no longer active. Ask your Route Forum member responsible for membership to issue you with a new Invitation Code if you suspect that it lapsed.

2. Open your internet browser and enter this website address: www.RouteToolkit.co.za

3. The normal sign-in window will appear which you’ll use to sign into the site in the future. If you already signed-up before, you should just enter your username and password and you’ll have access to the toolkit.

4. Below the sign-in fields, you will see the word ‘Register’. Click on this to register as a first time user.

5. A form will appear. Fill in your name, e-mail and other details. Use the Invitation Code in the Invitation Code field.

6. Click the tick box to confirm that you agree to the terms and conditions, then click on the Register button to complete the process.

7. Save your User Name and Password for future use.

8. You now have full access to the Open Africa Route Toolkit.
